Why GO?

In the city of Manaus, Brazil, there is an estimated 300 youth who live on the streets full-time and an estimated 1400-1800 part-time. Jack and Penny are presently working with about 40 young boys they have found while walking the streets in Manaus, and 30 in Manacapuru.  In Brazil there are two different kinds of street child. "On the street" or those who return home each night, or every few days and "Of" the street, those who have no other place live but the street of Brazil.  Each week, Jack & Penny feed, talk and collect information on the young boys. In Brazil there is a legion of these unsupervised youth on the streets. Penny and Jack speak with all the children they encounter and photograph them. Those who have no other place to live become candidates for the HCS boys home.

HCS volunteer teams have traveled each year to Brazil since 1999. They are helping Jack & Penny to build a home where young boys have the opportunity to  live in a loving family surrounding. These are street kids, not your usual children. They have little understanding of what a family is supposed to be. Their home has been the street. Most of the kids have lived there over 5 years. Some over 10.

It would seem that a young boy would jump at the chance to leave the street, but unfortunately this is not true. Lack of trust and the failure of anyone ever trying to do something permanent to help these children have taught them to be leery of anything that sounds too good to be true.

The fact that Jack & Penny know so many of the older street boy helps them to build new relationships with the younger, newer boys they find on the street.

God has blessed us! The HCS Boys Home includes dormitories, bath houses, kitchen/commissary, a school, and a new recreation building. Jack and Penny hope that this year with your help, we will be able to complete all facilities.  This will allow us to house 30 youth at the HCS Boys home.

In addition to the homes for the boys, we have built a new Church on Hope Island. See igreja batista nova esperanca.htm

This Home is the fist of two that are needed. One for boys and as God blesses us with the needed funds and personnel , we will transform this home into one for girls, and build a new one for our boys.

Project Description

Most of the time you will stay at the floating camp house across from  the HCS Boys camp. You will build new structures or help improve the existing buildings and grounds. While at the HCS camp, You will be working  side by side with the boys who have made a choice to leave the street. They will also enjoy showing you their home, church, and surrounding  jungle and river area. You will get to fish, site-see, and explore the surrounding area with them and Pr. Jack as your guide.  Please see

Also, your team will have an opportunity to go to the street with Jack and Penny as they feed the street kids on you last night in Manaus Brazil. There may be opportunities to serve these kids by administering basic medical care, to them that night on the street.
