Each Summer, since 2000, we host
Volunteer teams at our HCS Boys
Home. This summer you will have the
opportunity to join one of the teams
that are coming to help us continue
our work. The links will tell you
more about our Boys camp and how you
might be able to help.
Our camp is located on a small
island on the Manacapuru River, a
tributary that connects to the
Solimoes River which is one of the
largest tributaries of the Amazon
watershed. Manacapuru is about 50
miles southwest of Manaus, Brazil,
the city where our teams arrive by
airplane. From there you will take a
bus, cross the mighty Amazon on a
ferry, and travel into the
interior.At Manacapuru, you will
have a great regional breakfast at a
small hotel, and then take a boat to
our HCS Baptist Boys Camp.
The week will be spent
working side by side with Pastor Jack, Penny, and the street boys who are
presently living at the camp. From here you will have a good vantage point to
see the vast Amazon ecosystem. The many different species of birds, small
animals and fish make this mission trip an enjoyable adventure.
You will also have the opportunity
to attend wonderful church services
and visit with the families that
live around the HCS camp. Guided
fishing and nature boat trips will
be available after work each day.
The camp is rustic, but very
beautiful. Screened , floating
sleeping cabins allow the jungle
night sounds and spouting boto
(Amazonas porpoise) to sing you
peacefully to sleep after a hard
days work at the camp. You will have
great food, fun and good Christian
fellowship while on this Jungle
Mission adventure. Penny and Pastor
Jack along with their boys are
looking forward to seeing you.

2008.
Street
Children at a glance.
There
are an estimated 12 million children
who live and work on the streets in
Brazil alone. Most of these children
(75%) have some family links but
spend most of their lives on the
streets .
They
spend their days begging, parking &
washing cars, selling trinkets, or
shinning shoes, to help
their families income.
A majority
of these children never go
beyond a forth grade education.
The
remaining 25% live full-time on the
streets, often with a group of other
children. Known as "Crianças da
rua," they sleep in doorways, parks,
abandoned buildings, or vacant lots.
Since it's hard to get a regular job
with no permanent home, many
resort to petty theft and
prostitution to survive.
Many other children live at the
city's waste site, living on the
garbage others have discarded.
Most street children
in Manacapuru & Manaus Brazil where we work are addicted to shoe
glue or other inhalants. This takes away their hunger, and
keeps them high, helping them to detach from their hard
existence on the street. The cost of this addiction is high,
most develop physical and psychological problems. including
hallucinations, kidney failure, pulmonary edema, and
irreversible brain damage. Abuse, physical, emotional, and
sexual by parents, or step-parents is the most common
reason for children to leave their families.
Hope for the Children
of the Street-HCS
We meet the kids on their
turf. . . .
we provide for their physical needs . . . .
with Gods love. . . we plants the seeds of
Hope.
Why volunteer with HCS ?
We need your help, and we are asking
for it.
Hope
for the Children of the Street,
known as HCS in Brasil, rescues
these poor children from wherever
they are found. Our first steps are
to build a bridge of love, trust and
Hope by starting to provide for the
child's basic needs. On the street
HCS provides, good nourishing food,
clean used clothes, along with
simple medical aid.
Meeting these basic needs along with just
spending time talking and joking with the children, opens many
doors, and helps them prepare for more serious questions &
solutions. Soon many ask for additional help and Pastor
Jack and his wife Penny, start the long process of helping them
learn anew that there is Hope, and there are those who want to
help, love and guide them as they start this new journey.
This always leads to the
moment when the child understands he needs Jesus.
HCS has built a Street Boys
Home on the Manacapuru River. The first simple cabins were built
in 2000 with the help of 1st & 2nd Baptist churches of
Springfield Mo. Each year since churches & volunteers have
helped HCS to improve the facilities. They now have two
dormitories, a kitchen, a bath house, a school, and a new
recreation building. The property will allow for a maximum of 48
boys, with the addition of one more dormitory and bath house. By
Gods grace future plans are to purchase a 200 hector island
upriver and start the boys project over. This larger space will
be able to accommodate up to 200 boys, and allow the present
facility to be changed into the much needed a street girls home.
As God continues to
bless us with more volunteers and funds, these new
opportunities will be listed as current projects.
The following volunteer
opportunities are available in 2008.
We will be glad to customize a trip
for your church. We can accommodate
Teams between 8-24 members.
Individuals who whish to come will
be placed into smaller teams. on
average, most church groups stay 8
to 10 days.
Volunteers who chose to work at the
HCS Boys Home will receive a double
blessing. They will not
only have the experience of a
lifetime helping the boys as they
learn how to change their lives into
balanced productive happy children,
but will have the opportunity to
explore the Amazon rainforest
filled with exuberance and mystery
after work each day. A one day river
trip is also included on the HCS
river boat. The final 2 nights will
be spent at a nice hotel in Manaus
sightseeing, shopping, and with the
opportunity to walk the
streets at night with HCS
Missionaries, as they minister to
street children.
At the HCS Boys home you will help
in a wide range of recreational
activities such as art, music,
dancing, sports, etc. that promotes
learning abilities of the children.

There are many
poor areas in Brazil where there is
a great need of health workers. In
the interior where the HCS Boys Home
is located, many simple infections
go untreated. Worms, are common in
children. Cuts, scrapes and burns go
with out proper medical treatment.
Dental hygiene is far from adequate,
so dentist stay busy pulling teeth.
Pregnancy starts in the early teens
here and many young girls are
uninformed and not prepared to care
for their new infants.
As a health volunteer in Brazil, you
will minister to the HCS Boys,
church members and surrounding
community members with basic health
needs. Train young women in
small groups how to care for their
young by maintaining sanitary
conditions such as boiled water for
infants, & understanding how colds
and sicknesses spread.
You can help them understand the
importance of breast feeding,
proper nutrition and regular
immunizations for their children and
infants. Teach about aids, and other
STDs. You may have the opportunity
to work in the health centers and
assist the doctors and nurses and
participate in health awareness
campaigns and preventions. If you do
not have any medical background, you
can contribute by assisting and
carrying out miscellaneous works.
You will work between 6-8 hours a
day.

The HCS Boys Home was started in
2000, and was completely built by
Volunteers. It is always in need of
maintenance, painting, electrical
work, & plumbing. We also
still need to build one additional
dormitory and bath house. As we
continue to evangelize and plant new
churches on the Manacapuru river, we
will need construction teams to help
us build new church buildings.
As a HCS volunteer working in
construction, you will assist the
construction leaders of HCS and help
them to complete the various
projects. Construction experience is
helpful, but not necessary. All that
is needed is a will to serve.

One in four
people in the world have never heard the gospel
message, yet are anxious to hear Christ’s message of
hope. You and your church can help HCS
to evangelize the peoples of the un-reached
Manacapuru river. By joining a HCS short-term
missions team trip, you will be an integral part of
sharing the Love and Hope of Christ to those who
have not heard. It has been proven over and over
that once a new church or group of believers is
established, crime rate drops. This in turn helps to
unite members of the community, which in turn opens
more opportunities for the new believers to share
their faith . Pastor Jack and Penny Oyler,
founders of HCS have made a strong commitment to
discipleship of new converts, and continued help for
the new churches. This is a ministry of Igreja
Batista Novo Esperança do Amazonas, the church they
planted, and built across the inlet from the HCS
boys home.
As a HCS
volunteer helping to evangelize and plant new
churches, you will assist the pastor & ministry
leaders in the various ministries.
This will include the showing of the Jesus film, The
Passion, church services and door to door
evangelism. Each team leader should try and recruit
a health care worker to minister to the sick in the
community if possible. Giving away good used
clothes that team members have collected, is all
part of meeting needs.
This is a river
trip and all lodging will be on the boat. Sleeping
in hammocks, and eating simple meals. You may
be asked to give a testimony, or sing a hymn.
Bathing and washing clothes in the river.
Safe drinking water ice and soft drinks will be
provided. This trip is a great adventure for
men and women of all ages. Fishing for fish is
a favorite when not fishing for men.

ministry opportunity.
This is a total
missionary experience. You will experience day to
day living conditions, and all the trials of a new
missionary. This is a no frills packet, but loaded
with valuable life experiences. Not for the
uncommitted.
You will be
involved in every aspect of the HCS program and our
church ministry. You will perform, basic
tasks; cooking, cleaning, cloths washing, for the
boys, and for church events, You will
evangelize, help in church services, and service
preparation, community visitation, medical aid, and
possibly help us as we continue to build, all
the while studying the Portuguese language. You will
help with volunteer teams. Your meals will be local
cuisine, fish, chicken, fish, rice, potatoes, fish ,
tomatoes, cabbage, and other veggies you would not
recognize, along with local wildlife and more fish.
The fruit is wonderful, along with their juices. The
homemade bread is absolutely out of this world!
There is a small generator for lights and fans for
about 3-4 hours each night.
We accept young men and women 18
and older who can qualify and believe they can Hack
It..
