Special Needs
The
following is a list of general medical supplies that Penny and Jack use to
minister to the physical needs of the kids. Please ask your friends, family and
church group to support you by donating items on the list below. This is the
best way to get supplies to the missionaries. Please plan to take maximum
luggage. These are listed in priority of need.
- Tylenol for babies,
Liquid
- Tylenol for children,
chewable
- Tylenol - Adult
- Triple antibiotic
ointment
- Ibuprofen
- General
Antibiotics ( with direction on how to take them)
Cipro -- Amoxicillin
-- Ampicillin -- Zithromax -- Ceclor
Generic
products are just fine.
Pack only a personal amount or a little more.
If every team member brings a little, the combined total will add up, and
make a difference!
IMPORTANT:
All these items must be
packed in the owners luggage. Brazilian law allows each traveler to bring in
$500. worth of new "other" personal items. We need these gifts, but
do not want to abuse this provision either. These items should be packed with
your clothes and other personal baggage. The customs agent may find it
hard to believe that you would use 48 bars of soap in one week, but would most
likely let 6 bars and a big bottle of shampoo go with no question.
Team
Boxes full of one item or medical items will probably not be allowed into the
county by customs.
Other Specific Items that Jack and Penny can not buy
or is very expensive in Brazil & would be a welcome gift for the missionaries.
- 1 box Ziploc quart freezer bag
- 1 box Ziploc gallon freezer bag
-
1 box VELVEETA cheese
(the name brand)
-
1 large jar Crunchy Peanut butter
-
1 bottle of maple syrup
-
2 packs Ultra WET ONES
Anti-bacterial portable washcloths (not baby wipes)
BAGGAGE
- Weight limits have
changed, since 9/11 and increased security, You are allowed
two
50 pound bags/boxes/containers.
No more than
50 pounds. 62" length limit.
- Extra bags cost $$?. If you want, you may wish to pay this so you can contribute more to the ministry there. This is far and away the cheapest and most reliable method to get packages into Brazil. I sent a letter size package FedEx and it costs $50!
- You should be able to get your personal items in one bag/box. Plan to use the second bag/box for taking donations to HCS (see the list at the top of this page) .
- Also
plan to take good clean used clothes for children & teenagers. Your Sunday School class can help you collect items.
- A LARGE ice-chest is great for packing in and is a great item to donate to the missionaries.
The best size and deal is at Sam's Wholesale club. White 36"
Igloo.
Take along an empty duffel to haul any of our own stuff home.
- You can also take ONE carry-on bag as long as they will fit below a seat or in the overhead compartment.
- Mark all your bags with a team color tape (coming to
Manaus) with the HCS address:
Jack & Penny Oyler
Av. Eduardo Riberio #128
Manacapuru, Amazonas, Brasil
69400000
- Put these on the handle of your luggage. It makes it much easier to find in them baggage claim.
- Designate one team member to count all bags and
confirm that all have been accounted for each time they are checked
Money
Bring spending money that can be converted to Brazilian currency for souvenirs and gifts.
During the free days in Manaus the team is on their own, and will be responsible
for their lunch, touring, and shopping. Personal money can be converted at a
local currency exchange.
ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
Copies
Be sure to Make a copy of your visa application and passport. Take an extra passport/visa picture with you if you have one. Taking these with you makes it easier to get a replacement in case yours is lost.
